Brave New Films Creates Media Impacting Social Justice Issues

May 23, 2016

Brave New Films is a nonpartisan nonprofit that champions social justice issues using a model of media, education and grassroots volunteer involvement to inspire, empower, motivate and teach civic participation. Using media, films, volunteers and Internet video campaigns, it informs the public, challenges mainstream media with the truth, and motivates people to take action on social issues nationwide. Thanks in part to the support of Voqal, Brave New Films produced and distributed 22 video shorts focused on its four main campaigns—Justice, Inequality, Security and the NRA Guns Safety Project

The Justice campaign produced seven videos that dealt with the issues of mental health, racial justice, recidivism and alternatives to incarceration. The Security campaign released rapid-response videos about foreign policy in the Middle East and educated audiences on Iran and nuclear war. The Inequality campaign focused on exposing the carried tax loophole and the biases of the Federal Reserve. Finally, the NRA Guns Safety Project premiered three videos focusing on policies to prevent violence. The efforts conducted for each of these campaigns worked together to help Brave New Films achieve their mission.

Brave New Films’s reach continues to grow as a result of this work. Its webpage has over 400 million unique visitors. In addition, it was able to increase its membership over 30 percent. On Facebook it has almost 500,000 followers and has a YouTube channel where viewers have watched over 35 million minutes of video. Finally, Brave New Films content has been featured in programs on several major media platforms including Univision, CNN, The Nation, AlterNet, Vice, the LA Times, Salon.com, Vox, Buzzfeed, Time Magazine, the Huffington Post, Daily Kos, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Upworthy.

Brave New Films continues to develop, mature and innovate to highlight the advances and obstacles to the inequality present in the United States. Thanks to these efforts it has built new partnerships, expanded its audience, and created emergent strategies that will help in its efforts to address the economic, judicial and social inequalities that face our society. As a strong proponent of social equity, Voqal is proud to support the work of Brave New Films and looks forward to its continued efforts to address this important issue and its underlying causes through the use of media and film.
